UN@Bundestheaterpreis Symposium

A celebration of the diversity of the performing arts: With the 5th Federal Theater Prize, Claudia Roth, Minister of State for Culture and Media, honors medium-sized and smaller theater companies – and thus the artistic range of the German theater landscape. The jury selected the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse in Berlin for the main prize, worth 200,000 euros . Three awards, each endowed with 100,000 euros, go to the Theaterhaus Jena in the category of city theaters and state theaters, the Chamäleon Theater Berlin in the category of private theaters and guest theaters and the LOFFT – DAS THEATER in Leipzig in the category of independent production houses. About the jury’s reasons
The award gala will take place on October 11th, 2023 in the Haus der Berliner Festspiele.

Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth: “ With the Federal Theater Prize we honor the valuable work of small and medium-sized stages as places of artistic social experimentation. In doing so, they continually create new spaces for thought in current debates and opportunities for social encounters. Inclusive, diverse and power-critical work is possible at the award-winning houses. This makes them pioneers both in the theater landscape and in the entire cultural landscape and that deserves our recognition. â€œ

The Federal Theater Prize 2023 is endowed with €200,000 and honors remarkable and exemplary, innovative work nationwide. This main prize will be awarded once in total across all three application categories. In addition, an award worth €100,000 will be presented in each application category. The overall jury decides on the award of the cross-category main prize.

“In a social atmosphere in which – also in view of the climate crisis – a feeling of inability to act is emerging, cooperative theater and the accompanying search for and finding of joint solutions can also take on a pioneering role. The prize-winning theaters of the 5th Theaterpreis des Bundes have taken on this task, exploring new forms of listening, understanding and negotiating through extraordinary alliances. Whether in forming new alliances, collaborating with unusual venues (such as a correctional facility), or through open forms of work. And above all, they are united by the fact that, once initiated, they pursue collaborations over the long term and with vigor.

For such a pioneering role to have its effect, there must be platforms where experiences can be exchanged, pleasant moments shared and complications discussed. This symposium makes an attempt, at least for one day, to provide such a platform. We, the curators of this conference and part of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), want to talk to artists and stake holder of the theater world because they have managed to form connections over a long period of time that offer space for new aesthetic forms and for a new togetherness “
